What happens when a perfume house treats fragrance like fine art, not a marketing exercise — and how we built our own interpretation of that idea, formulated to actually last in Singapore's heat.
Most fragrance houses tell you a story about heritage. Byredo told a different one: that a scent could be treated the same way a gallery treats a painting — as a single, uncompromising idea, stripped of anything that doesn't serve it. No committee-designed crowd-pleaser notes, no safety net of a familiar accord borrowed from somewhere else. Just one clear concept, executed with total confidence. That philosophy is unusual in an industry built on market testing, and it's exactly what our BO collection was created to honour.
A perfume house built like an art studio
Byredo was founded in Stockholm in 2006 by Ben Gorham, an artist whose background wasn't in perfumery at all — it was in fine art, and that origin shows in almost everything the house has produced since. Its fragrances tend to be built around a single, deliberately abstract idea rather than a conventional "romantic floral" or "fresh citrus" brief: a memory, a place, a mood distilled down to its essence and then given room to breathe on skin, rather than being layered over with a dozen competing notes.
The result is a signature that's easy to recognise even if you couldn't name why. Byredo fragrances tend to sit close to the skin rather than project loudly across a room. They favour clean, almost minimalist structures — often built around a strong, singular note — over the maximalist, multi-layered compositions more common in traditional French perfumery. Why we built a BO collection
When our perfumers set out to interpret this house at Aroma Sense, the challenge was different from the one posed by a more conventional, note-heavy fragrance family. There's very little to hide behind in a minimalist composition — every ingredient has to earn its place, because there's no crowd of competing notes to mask an imbalance. Getting a Byredo-style fragrance right meant getting the fewer elements exactly right, rather than layering enough complexity that small mistakes disappear into the blend.
That's the same discipline we bring to every collection in our library, formulated at our standard 30% oil concentration — well above the 15–20% typical of a commercial eau de parfum — so a composition built to be quiet on skin doesn't also disappear within a few hours. A minimalist fragrance still has to survive a full working day in Singapore's heat and humidity, and that's a formulation problem as much as a creative one.

- Give it a few minutes before judging it. Minimalist fragrances often reveal their character slowly, once the top note settles, rather than presenting everything at once.
- Pair it with fewer other scented products that day. Scented lotion, strongly fragranced laundry detergent, or a heavy hand cream can easily overpower a quiet composition before it gets the chance to develop.
- Reapply once, rather than spraying heavily upfront. Because our concentration is higher than a standard EDP, a light midday touch-up will usually outperform two extra sprays in the morning.
