It's tempting to assume the fragrance itself changed, or that the bottle you bought was somehow inferior. In reality, the fragrance is exactly the same — what changed is the environment it now has to survive in, and most perfumes were never built with that environment in mind.

The chemistry of a fragrance that's fighting the weather

Fragrance is, at its core, a mixture of volatile aromatic compounds suspended in a carrier — and "volatile" is the operative word. These compounds are designed to evaporate off the skin gradually, releasing scent as they do. Heat accelerates evaporation. Humidity changes how quickly moisture, and the compounds dissolved near it, lift off the skin's surface. A higher concentration means more aromatic material has to evaporate before the scent disappears, which directly translates into more hours of wear, especially in a climate working to speed that evaporation along.

Layering habits matter too. Fragrance applied over freshly showered, slightly damp skin tends to bind and last measurably longer than fragrance applied to fully dry skin, because a small amount of residual moisture slows the initial evaporation spike that happens in the first few minutes after application.

Five adjustments that make a real difference in the tropics

  • Apply right after showering, while skin is still slightly damp. This traps the fragrance closer to the skin's surface instead of letting it evaporate immediately in the heat.
  • Target pulse points over fabric. Wrists, the base of the throat, and behind the ears generate warmth that helps a fragrance open and develop properly.
  • Moisturise unscented skin first. Dry skin holds fragrance poorly; a thin layer of unscented lotion beforehand gives the composition something to adhere to.
  • Choose a higher concentration for outdoor days. If you know you'll be moving between air-conditioned and non-air-conditioned spaces, a 30% concentration will noticeably outlast a standard EDP.
  • Store your bottles away from windows and bathrooms. Heat and humidity don't just shorten wear time on skin — stored improperly, they degrade the fragrance inside the bottle itself over time.
