The character

What Citronella actually smells like

Citronella is grass, not flower — steam-distilled from Cymbopogon nardus, a fast-growing tropical grass long used across Southeast Asia to keep outdoor spaces feeling clean and lived-in. That heritage shows in the scent itself: sharp, lemony and unmistakably green, with none of the softness you'd get from a citrus fruit peel.

It's the note most people reach for when they want a room — or more often a balcony, patio, or covered outdoor area — to smell the way the outdoors does on a good day: fresh, a little sharp, never cloying.

A note on safety

For external aromatherapy use only — never taken internally. Use with care during pregnancy, ideally in a diffuser rather than on skin, and avoid entirely during the first trimester unless a qualified practitioner advises otherwise. Suitable for diffuser and inhalation use for adults and children 12 and over; for younger children, consult a healthcare professional first. Use with caution around pets, and never apply topically to an animal. Store below 30°C, away from direct sunlight and out of reach of children and pets.
